In regards to 2006, much of the information is still valid regarding candidates. "...the people of the 24th District, a recently gerrymandered area stretching from Simi Valley through Ventura County and up the middle of Santa Barbara County..." are faced with some of the same opponents that ran in 2006. Read what the Santa Barbara Independent said about Jill Martinez in a very clear, short and nut-shell summary about the candidates.
The VC Reporter stated Jill Martinez is : "...a seasoned fund raiser for various philanthropic organizations..." And further states that it is difficult to find a "brave soul," up to the challange.
Ventura County Firefighters broke with tradition and endorsed Jill Martinez when John Duff, Firefighters' Local 3431 President and 25-year veteran of the department, said "...we just followed everyone else and backed" the incumbent. Not this time." Duff further stated the Incumbent hadn't endorsed local public safety issues, including that year's P6, which would have provided $2 million to the fire department. The Earth Times.
The Boilermakers also supported Jill, saying: "WE NEED ALL members and their families to vote for these recommended candidates on Nov. 7, so we can put control of Congress back in the hands of legislators who support working families." http://www.boilermakers.org/files/activist/Activist_Election2006.pdf.
What did the AFL-CIO say, about the CA-24th incumbent? They said he voted wrong, on working family issues, 87% of the time.
"Jill Martinez, however, sports an impressive résumé more in tune with our county’s concerns: she campaigned for affordable housing as Ventura County Housing Authority’s Deputy Director and has been vocal in her localized concern regarding the Iraq War, supporting a stronger plan for the war and eventual pullout. She has also brought to the forefront the issues of affordable medical care and equal opportunities for education." VC Reporter, "The VC Reporter endorsements,How we’re voting and why," VC Reporter, 11/02/2006.
The incumbent in Congress refuses to debate Jill Martinez. We need a leader with courage. The current congressman refuses to put "Republican" on his campaign signs. We deserve a leader with courage. T.O. Acorn October 5, 2006.
Check out the indepth interview done by VC Reporter 05/11/2006, for some pretty revealing insight into Martinez and her beliefs and hopes for California and beyond.
"Thanks to her efforts, thousands of these citizens have a decent place to live and better opportunities for employment and advancement, and feel part of our communities. In a city such as Lompoc, community cohesion is critical to its prosperity. Through her leadership by example, Jill has helped cities strengthen their cohesion. For the first time in many years, I’ve met a candidate who believes what many of us do and backs it up with action." http://www.independent.com/news/2006/oct/04/jumping-for-jill-1/
I wholeheartedly concur with your endorsement of Jill Martinez. At a fundraiser, I heard a speech by her and I was touched to the core by her passion and commitment to social justice and responsible government, and her interest in everyone in that room and beyond. She will bring sanity, honesty, and fairness back to Congress.http://www.independent.com/news/2006/oct/26/letters-102606/
